PTK SD 136 = Ig 140 : Improving Students’ Pronunciation using Songs (A Classroom Action Research in the Fourth Grade of SDN Makamhaji 01 Kartasura in 2007/2008 Academic Year)

ABSTRACT

xxxxxxxxx. Improving Students’ Pronunciation using Songs (A Classroom Action Research in the Fourth Grade of SDN Makamhaji 01 Kartasura in 2007/2008 Academic Year). A Thesis. English Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Sebelas Maret University. Surakarta. 2009.

The objectives of the study are to find out whether songs improve students’ pronunciation and how songs are used effectively in improving the pronunciation of the fourth grade students of SDN Makamhaji 01 Kartasura.
The techniques the researcher used to collect the data were observation and test. The observation was used to gather information dealing with the students’ progress during the teaching and learning process. Besides, the oral test was done to know the students’ improvement in pronunciation before and after the technique was implemented.
In this research, the researcher conducted a classroom action research from Feb 27th to April 30th 2008 at the fourth grade of SDN Makamhaji 01 Kartasura. There were two cycles of action and each consisted of a series of steps, namely: identifying the problems, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting, and revising the plan.
Based on the result of the research, a conclusion can be drawn that teaching English through the use of songs does improve the students’ pronunciation. The use of such technique has shown a certain level of improvement on their pronunciation of the related terms. Easily understood pronunciation of words and sentences obviously represents their better pronunciation intelligibility. Learning English through songs can make the students get more confident and motivated in joining the lesson as well
The explanation of how songs can improve the students’ pronunciation may be simply put on the repetition of the songs taking place during the lesson. The result of the study implies that singing songs again and again provides important pronunciation practice by which the students are facilitated to develop aspects of language including the improvement of the pronunciation of sounds, stress, and intonation in English.
